I've never seen this one before. As far as anti-virus, I recommend Avast. It's free, not a memory hog and I've had it find stuff Norton couldn't. Then again, I'm the president of the Anti-Norton club.

Leaving computers on overnight = $2.8 billion a year* Of course, it's also a fact that your PC will function better if you restart it regularly, and nightly shutdowns can help you avoid having to suddenly reboot in the middle of the day when you'd otherwise be productive. So even though this little laptop, by my math, eats up only about a quarter's worth of power overnight, maybe it's a smart idea -- and ultimately a time-saver, too -- to shut it down after hours after all.*To read the whole article, click the title

Hey guys, I need your help!
I'm buying my first new PC in like 7 years. Remember the "Dude you're getting a Dell" commercial guy? That's when I bought my current PC. Time for an upgrade.
I need advice. I have no idea what to get. (I don't want an Apple. Sorry Vic.) I went to Best Buy and their customer service sucked.
I do know this much- I want lots of memory. I take lots of pictures and video clips and I need storage space. I'll want a video editing program as well as Photoshop, so I need something compatible.
So where should I go? What should I look for? Best brands? Good prices? Anti-virus programs? Anti-spyware programs? Am I forgetting anything?

I don't know much about computers, but one thing I do know is "memory" is more about the computers ability to run a program (if you game, you need tons of memory) and if you want lots of storage space, you need a bigger hard drive. your options with those two factors are going to depend on if you're wanting a desk top or a laptop.

Raven, Look for something with the new quad core processors, about 4GB RAM, and as much hard drive as you can afford. I have had HP's for a long time and have been very happy with them. Of course, I'm gonna tell you to go to RadioShack ;D Everything comes with trial versions of anti-virus (usually Norton or MacAfee) that you have to pay for after 60-90 days. Personally, I'd uninstall those and go with something like Avast. Most don't come with high end photo editing software like Photoshop. Get a laptop for goodness sakes. They do everything a desktop can unless you're into HEAVY gaming. Then with a wireless router you can watch TB and chat with us!!!! Just sayin, that's the important thing, right? ;D

Why no Apple love Raven? You know they come with iMovie and iDVD right? Good basic video tools and also I've never had virus or spyware issues. Apple also offers an educational discount if you are a student or teacher. Not trying to sway you over to the dark side just nudging you to check it out a bit further. As for Photoshop, do you know anyone that is a student or a teacher? If so, you can have them order Photoshop or Lightroom for you from Academic Superstore at great educational pricing. My brother is a teacher and he ordered Adobe Design Suite Standard CS3 for me with no problems, they are Mac and Win friendly. Any Apple questions feel free to ask, I can be unbiased. Oh, and I've found in general Best Buy customer service sucks, but then I hate the Apple Store too. They can be a be condescending to say the least but the machines are nice.

Raven, I know very little about PCs, my bro is the one who usally handles these things for me. Like T, I have an HP. Bought it last year and I have ZERO complaints. And it's very affordable, too. For anti-virus, I use AVG. It's free and you can dowload it online. It's done a pretty good job for me so far. My bro is in the PC industry so I'll try to get some details from him when he comes over next week and I'll let you know what he thinks is good these days.

^Thanks everyone. Another net friend is recommending this one. Mendi, I'm not looking for a Mac because I don't want to learn something too new, for one. I know PCs, so I'm gonna stick with a PC. Plus, I've found that with most Apple products, you pay more for the name because they're trendy.

One cool thing I recommend is a TV tuner card. It's not an expensive feature to add and then you can watch TV on your PC and use your PC as a Tivo. I love mine.

Well, sorry to hear you got bad service at Best Buy, but I have to admit that I've had pretty good luck...I did have a little issue with them, but their warantees pretty much rock, and it's easy to use since they have geek squad in store who can fix quite a bit without having to send out...
