Might as well start this thread now and add to it as I get updates from Charlaine Harris (who gets her info straight from Alan Ball). This week Charlaine will be on the set of True Blood being interviewed for an HBO short "The Making of True Blood". She reported that she had to negotiate her wardrobe choice for the interview, right down to the size of the polka dots on her trousers. She will be interviewed with Alan Ball and by herself. Maybe more details will "slip" during her visit to the set in northern Louisiana...we can only hope so.

Kinda lame question. Why is it called True Blood? I mean, I know of the bottled synthetic... But why not after Sookie, or Southern Vampire series, like the books? Was that up to Charlaine? Just wondering.

Just wondering. Charlaine has nothing official to do with the show, it is strictly Alan Ball's bailiwick. He chose to call it True Blood after the synthetic blood, the invention of which, allowed the vampires to come "out of the coffin" (so to speak). Alan Ball keeps Charlaine in the loop because he has great respect for "her world". He even has her listed as a writer. Late yesterday, Charlaine announced the premiere date for True Blood on her website...HBO,September 7th...mark your calendars boys and girls. I'll let you know when I find out when "The Making Of...True Blood" will begin airing. Charlaine said the interview went well. She also got to meet the actors playing Andy Bellefleur, Sam Merlotte, and Terry Bellefleur (Chris Bauer, Sam Trammell, and Todd Lowe) because they were filming in Shreveport yesterday. Very exciting stuff!

So, is IMDB really accurate with this? They seem to have a lot of information, right down to the titles of the first 6 episodes.

So far they have been fairly accurate. Occasionally, I will drop in there to see if they are up to date on stuff. Alan Ball is really good about keeping Charlaine in the loop...she passes it on to me and the other moderator on her board, then we will post it if she hasn't already done so.

So she like, sold rights to the show to Alan Ball? Who's he? How's that work? Does she have ANY say? 'Cuz what a nightmare it could be for her to have her work misrepresented by someone else's vision of it. Ya know?

Alan Ball is the genius behind HBO's Six Feet Under and the movie, American Beauty.
He purchased the rights to the Southern Vampire series and the merchandising rights. (Oh, I am jonesing for Sookie merchandise.)
Charlaine trusts him implicitly. She has read some of the scripts and is very pleased with the quality. She is also on board with his casting decisions. She was on the set last week for an interview for "The Making of...True Blood".
I think it will be great and can't wait for Sept. 7th!

I understand if a few things have to be changed when a book becomes a movie or TV show but sometimes they just go too far. If a producer wants a show to be a success, they need to stick to the original material as closely as they can.
Keep the fans of the books happy then you've got a winner.
The Dresden Files is an example of this I think. While i really liked the show, it was nowhere as good as the books.

But Harry was very handsome. I couldn't get around Bob, though, I just wanted him to be a skull, not an actor.

It's never as good as the books because we all have a different visual in our heads when we read.
I'm so excited for the tv show, but nervous as well. I don't want anything to ruin "my" Sookie. Ya know?
