I have been wondering about this for a while. What is the pay scale like for authors? I'm not asking for specific numbers or a look into our favorite scribblers check book.
Are they paid by the word? Do they get a hard number or a percentage of the sales. How does the sale of ebooks affect them? What can we do as readers to make them look more attractive to the publishers?

Yeah, the pay is depressing. And yet look how many of us are going for it!

this is why I'm trying to get at least 3 books in a series done before I even started querying ....and maybe a couple other books ... I've got some High Fantasy and a YA that I need to work on too ... ahem ... not crazy.

Don't tell an agent that. They get squicky if you have that much done because there may be major changes in book 1 that would cause book 3 to be meaningless. Miriam Kriss was talking about it at Conestoga when I went. It freaked me out because I already had a book and a half in a series written.
