Well, I haven't seen it yet, but am probably going to this coming weekend when we head up to visit Daisy's family...
I'm not sure what to make of the changes they've clearly made...For one, they all seem way too old...Any other thoughts?

for me, it was one of those 'as a movie, it's good .... as a movie based on a book, it wasn't that great' sort of situations for me. don't click the spoiler unless you don't mind being spoiled some or have already seen it. annabeth is supposed to be blonde ... luke is supposed to have a scar ... annabeth is now a cross between original annabeth and clarise (daughter of ares for those that don't remember) and the only one that is the right age is luke and maybe grover. they did nothing with anything ares except for a couple guys that luke calls sons of ares in capture the flag. nothing with any of the actual houses. everyone goes into it knowing that percy's dad is god of the sea. there is never a single mention of seaweed brain or wise girl (annabeth and percy's nicknames for each other). NOTHING about the titans (luke says he thinks it should be the next generation's turn, as in the demigods turn to be the ruling force). the pearls are supposed to be a gift from his dad, not part of the quest. he's actually supposed to be SENT on the fucking quest. nothing about the oracle. grover wasn't supposed to stay in the underworld ... percy's mom was. she was supposed to be returned when percy got hades' helm of darkness/invisibility/whatever back for him. nothing about that being stolen as well. percy was supposed to be in camp for a week actually learning stuff, nevermind the 2-3 days he was out of it. the whole war thing is supposed to be brewing for 6 months, not 2 weeks. percy is supposed to keep the minotaur horn as a memento. hell, he's supposed to rip it off, not have it get stuck in a tree. no Mr. D. grover never got his searchers license so I guess they're not doing a second one, since the whole point of that book is grover goes searching and gets trapped and needs percy's help. NOTHING WITH THE FUCKING TITANS!!!!!!!!!! hell, all it would have taken was luke saying 'it's time for a new golden age' or something. percy's dad never stuck around, he left after one summer with his mom. in the book, there was no hydra in nashville, but there was a chimera in st. louis. I understand the movie is already 2 hours long, but seriously, with all the stuff they changed from the book, there would have been time for this or that or hell, even just little mentions here or there would have made it so much better. they changed way too much for me to be happy with it as a movie based on a book ... so I'm kinda trying to ignore the fact that it's based on a book. also, anyone with any working knowledge of greek mythology would ask this .... WHAT THE FUCK WAS PERSEPHONE DOING IN THE UNDERWORLD IN THE MIDDLE OF SUMMER? ?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?

It does sound like they aren't planning on a sequal, which is kind of stupid when you consider that there's already 5 books which would mean pretty much a guaranteed 4 sequals... especially if they're not mentioning the titans...

well, from what I understand, 5 is it with the books ... they're done ... but yea ... really stupid move on their part. I'm sure they could fanangle something to make a sequel work, but it would take a bit of thinking on their part, and I believe they have already displayed the fact that they can't do that.

I have to agree with "Ignorance is bliss." I am not up on my mythology and I've not read the books, therefor I really liked the movie.
I was going to read the book first but changed my mind. I'm glad I did.

I will probablly read them.
On a similar note, I saw City of Ember on HBO. I bet that's another book that got shredded by film.

I haven't read the books, but loved the movie. I thought it was very clever. I did, however think something in the beginning was quite obvious... When Percy is about to leave camp to go save his mom and 2 other kids insist on going too, then Luke helps by giving him all of this amazing shit and advice but not actually going too, red flags when up. Especially when he just offered up his "favorite shield". WTF? He just met this kid and he's giving him all this stuff? I was suspicious of Luke immediately.

Well, that makes a bit more sense in the books since all quests are supposed to be undertaken by threes...in fact, more than that number runs the risk of failing the quest and getting people killed...

BTW, Elle, it wasn't summer. The kids were in school.

there are only two solstices a year ... summer and winter ... and that sure wasn't 2 weeks before winter solstice at the beginning of the movie

Books 1, 2, and 4 all take place durring the summer...Camp Half-blood is supposed to be a summer camp for demi-gods...And no, Persephone isn't in the underworld in the book...

yea ... I know ... RD was amazing as Persephone, but still ... it's annoying that they changed not only so much of the book, but so much of GREEK MYTHOLOGY for this ... it's just ... *shakes head*
