To give you a little back story from last season,
Arthur's father is very anti magic. all forms of it are forbidden in Camelot. No one but Merlin's mentor knows he is a wizard.
Morgana is a ward of the King's. She has a love hate relationship with Arther and also has visions.
Guenevere is the blacksmith's daughter and Morgana's handmaiden. Her father was killed late last season.
The dragon as you saw was a prisoner under Camelot. He gives good advice that is often costly. Merlin doesn't like going to him.
Merlin spends a good deal of his time playing the servant/oaf while trying to keep Arther safe in the process.

Read Jack Whyte's Camulod series and you will be ruined for anything else Merlin/Arthur again I watched about 15 mins of this show and was out after that. Can't get into it

They are may favorite, for sure. Really not Arthurian per se, since the last books ends right around when Arthur is born, but it is all the stuff that leads up to him. It is a really good series imo, but since no one comments on my books in the 'who are you reading now' unless it is some author who is here, I wouldn't be surprised if this series isn't popular around these parts. Im "different", I know

Well, people tend not to comment on authors they don't know, not nescessarrily ones they don't like...There are some fantasy fans around here, but it's not the primary genre, for obvious reasons...
