Yes, they count. Maybe what they were referring to was if a bookseller shelves a book that has been given a 'soft' release before the on-sale date. If bought before then, it's not tabulated in that all-important* first week of sales.
*This is something publishers and authors obsess over, but readers? Not so much. They just want their read, and who can blame them? If it's there, you take it. Ultimately, it all gets counted toward the bottom line. So even though hitting Da List is a goal, it's not something anyone can control. I say just write to your level best and leave the rest for someone else to worry about. *shrug*

There are some books that are deemed "SOS" = Strict On Sale and book stores get in trouble for putting them out before the SOS date. For example, the later Harry Potter books were Strict On Sale.
If they are NOT, we'll often put them out when we get them just to get them out of the stock room. The philosophy of a book store is: if it's not out on the shelves, it can't be seen my customers to be purchased. If customers can't buy our products, we can't make money. Companies are generally in business to make money. So unless it will get them into trouble, they'll put it out when they get it. They honestly don't care about authors' numbers. Why would they?
And like Vicki said, if a reader comes across the book they want, they're gonna get it when they see it, whether it's a few days before the official release date or not. We, as book lovers, all know how that is. You've been waiting for a book for months and *BAM* there it is. You're gonna snag it.

Thanks for all the info. It's interesting, the same author that mentioned it is now completely stressed over early release and asking readers to check their local book stores. Raven, I am way too amused by your new avie, btw.

Raven, I am way too amused by your new avie, btw. That stupid rodent doing the stare was all over the web, but adding Gerard Butler to it was pure genius. I this it's hilarious. ;D To be back on topic, I don't know why all first book sales don't just add up to equal the first sales whether it be first week or what. And I don't know how or why some are deemed SOS. Top sellers? It's not necessarily the biggest names.

Charlaine tried to get her publisher to send DEAD IN THE FAMILY for the Book Fair at RT, but they said NO...it is a Strict On Sale for the following Tuesday. There you have it...even the author can't get around the SOS. We did thank her for trying. Sigh.....

So the author I mentioned above has spent the last week flipping out on Twitter about early release and I was so close to unfollowing. Today I see that a fan sent a message saying they bought the book and liked it. Author responded, "Don't you READ??? Your book won't count on my rankings..... GOD. Why do I try?" Guess that settles it, one less follow for me! Vic, thanks for being such a sweetheart to your minions!

Ouch.
And maybe it's because I don't have minions. Or fans. *shudder* (My own pet peeve/rant: fans? Really? Who am I, Madonna? *rolling eyes* I hate when authors refer to their readers as fans. Engages my gag reflex.)
I have readers. And a good group of them too! ;-)
