Hi David!
Thank you for writing -- all great question.
So why superhero UF? Well, I actually didn't plan on the superhero elements, and I didn't know it was UF. ("Ignorance is bliss" was never more true. ) My agent had to tell me what it was I’d written after she took it on. At the time I started SCENT, I’d been having a miserable time writing, and I wanted to have fun again. So I decided to throw in all the elements that interested me. In went a romantic subplot, the noir I love in mystery fiction, strong world-building juxtaposed with my hometown of Las Vegas, a first-person narrative with a tough protagonist, and a good dollop of humor as well. The superhero mythology didn't come into play until Warren popped up in the third chapter and told me he was a modern-day superhero. And I stared back at the page and thought, “Well, why not?”
(BTW, if you want a gritty comic, try Joe Hill's LOCKE AND KEY. It's Hoo-mah-gawd gritty!)
And, yes, it would be great fun, and a relatively natural progression, to see my work turned into graphic form, but I have no control over that, and I don't know exactly how the process works. I'm going to tool around Comic-Con this summer and get a feel for the market and the people behind/driving it...kinda like peeking from behind splayed fingers to see what's going on.
I'm so glad you like the comic book shop scenes! They're my favorite to write, bar none. I've been in a few shops now, and I try to pick out common elements - and I knew it was something I had to get 'right' as readers would let me know if I didn't! - while adding some fun references (to satisfy my inner geek ) My favorite shop right now is across from the University in Las Vegas - Alternate Reality. The owner is nothing like Zane, but he knows everything. I love it.
And thank you for taking to my story so completely! Believe me, I'm having as much fun as you!
Thanks for answering my questions, I really do appreciate it. It is really cool to have an avenue to "talk" to one of my favorite authors and it gives you a way to keep an eye on your fans
Oh, and by the way, I can't wait for the 4th book!!
