Hey Vicki, With your edits to begin some time soon I was just wondering. How many times would you say you read your books by the time the final is sent off and do you ever think, "yeah, yeah, yeah, I know this part. Moving on." I ask because I find it hard to read over my own stuff too many times. Sometimes I just get flat out bored. Perhaps a bad sign, I admit. What say you? Stacey

Stace -
OMG, by the time the final final is sent off? Sheesh, I'm not sure I can even count. If you figure a minimum of four time before my editor ever sees it, then another two (that's conservative) for the edit, ditto if there's a second edit, then line edits, copyedits, page proofs...it's around a dozen times, and that's not counting picking through individual sections. Those are entire print outs.
Thanks for the reminder. Sheesh.
But, dude, break it down into small and simple steps. Then anything can be done!

Okay, At the risk of sounding "stoopid" what's a line edit? And the difference between copy edit and page proof? (guess I better learn these things...)

Okay, At the risk of sounding "stoopid" what's a line edit? And the difference between copy edit and page proof? (guess I better learn these things...) Not stupid at all! Line edits are the nit-picky line-by-line edits for grammar, punctuation, and clarity. My editor will often do these along with her overall edits, and usually twice. Copyedits are done by a copyeditor, covering much of the same territory, and as an outside reader they're also looking for continuity issues. Page proofs are when the ms has been typed and set and looks as it will on the page. This is usually the last chance you have to correct things, but they need to be relatively minor (meaning it's best if you've used a fine-tooth comb prior to this) because its expensive to make major changes once the pages are set, so they'll charge the author if there are over a certain number of corrections. But don't worry about learning all the terms -- different houses use different lingo, and sometimes jobs are combined -- this is just the way my editor and my house works. Clear as mud?

Thanks for that, Vicki! There's so much to have to learn about...too bad a person just can't write and be done with it.

Thanks Vicki, I'm already tired of this short story and I'm forcing myself to finish. Then I have a beta reader to look at it, THEN I might be able to read it again. I soooo don't care about them right now......Odd though, even as I write this, I can hear their little voices saying, "Hey! We can hear you, ya' know! You do TOO care about us! Don't leave us hangin'!" It's a twisted place, my head. stacey

I think the mind of a writer must truly be a scary place no matter what genre they specialize in.

Vicki, I have a writing question. Do you ever read your stuff to your husband? I've always read my poetry to mine and he always enjoys it, but he seems a little uncomfortable about my writing paranormal romance. He supports my efforts but I think he's really afraid that I want to read it to him. And I kind of do, but am a little embarrassed myself especially with the sex scenes. I think he would get a complex or something. Hahaha
