So I just finished listening to Chris Moore's "reading" of how he refuses to read his books at live appearances because he's not good at it. Vicki, what's your thought on this? Do you read excerpts at appearances? If so, do you enjoy it or if not, why?

I know she read an excerpt at one here in Vegas a few years ago but that might have been standard for the library it was at.

Hi Theresa, To tell the truth I didn't enjoy reading in the beginning because 1) I'm not in love with the sound of my own voice, and 2) I know the reader is going to go home and read it anyway, so why waste their time? I always love the Q&A best (as a member of the audience and as the author). Then I heard Kim Harrison read from ODW at her signing, and I loved hearing it in her own voice. It brought it to life in an unexpected way, and I realized if I liked it, others would too. So I think the key is to keep it interesting, short and then get on with the Q&A, where we can all get to know each other. Don'tcha think? Vic

Thanks Vicki! I agree 100%. I've always hated being read to, but felt like I must be in the minority. I'm not even really a fan of audiobooks. Plus, Q&A is definitely more fun and interesting!

I love readings! It is interesting to hear the author's intonation on her/his own words. I got to hear Nora Roberts do a reading once and it was great. And Neil Gaiman can read me anything - the phone book, a jury summons, anything. So while the Q & A's are always fun (unless people insist on asking stupid questions....grrrrr...then I get impatient!), I think a reading can add a lot to the experience of meeting an author. IMHO.
And Vicki, I have heard your voice on a podcast and it is quite lovely!!
Hey, I hit 1,000 posts! Are the marching band and fireworks happening soon??? I don't see them yet.

I heard Kim Harrison read as well and must agree that it lent a new dimension to "Rachel" and her sense of humor. I enjoyed it very much. I think perhaps that a reading works especially well with humor, because humor is hard to 'hear' a lot of the time. It can be interpreted so many ways, so a voice reading it can be particularly useful.
