I missed most of the first run of B5. Thanks to the Sci-Fi Channel, I was able to see it all and loved it. Later I watched it all again thanks to Netflix. Until Firefly, this was my all time favorite sci-fi show.
B5 was an epic space opera that lasted 5 years and covered a couple thousand years of time. Most of it focused on the 5 years on Babylon 5 but there were several episodes that took place farther up or down the time line.
This show had everything from state of the art special effects for it's time, great writing. and excellent cast and for me a big wow factor. The show was complex. There were plot threads planted in season one that never got resolved until season 3 or 4.
It also spawned a whole slew of good books to read. I read the trilogy based on Bestor and thought it was very good.
This show was pretty much everything Star Trek wasn't. The plot felt very fluid and dynamic. Characters grew, changed disappeared came back or even got killed off.
Each season of Babylon 5 was like a new book in a series of books. Each episode was like a chapter. This is one of the first shows I've ever seen like this. I loved it.
If you like sci-fi and have not seen B5, I suggest you find a way to see it. You wont be sorry.

I ~loved~ this show, at the time it was on it was The best show around hands down. The spin offs were even good.

I would have liked to see Crusade do better but it died quickly. The movies are good though.

I also loved the show but thought the follow ups were a little light weight. It took me a while to get into the series. I didn't realized there was an overall storyline going on until my girlfriend explained things to me and got me to finally watch it. We sat and watched the finale together and bawled like babies. Good times!

Same here. That last show was a sad one. I am way to emotional for a guy anyway. Sad movies always get to me.

Well, Season 1 is kinda spotty for plot...some of the episodes are cliched in the Sci-fi universe, but once you plow your way through that it becomes truly amazing! It is still my favorite show of all time...I love the story arcs, but mostly it's the character developement...there's not a single character that doesn't grow and change through the series...
As for Crusade, I blame it on TNT...they have a bad habit of creating shows and then canceling them mid-way...heck, I've seen the synopsis for the three episodes that were never filmed and I'm even more frustrated...the main plot for the show was to be a three way war between Earthforce, the remnants of the Psi Corp and the Excalibur crew...Bester was in the very next episode!

Bestor is something else. The books I mentioned about him cover his life from the time he was born to his death. It also mentions many things that happened in the show as the story progresses.
I don't remember their titles but they shouldn't be too hard to find.
There are books about other events and characters but that was the only set I read.

What did everyone think of the spin off show about the Rangers?

I so agree. I think that is why I didn't get into the show at first and it took my friend to help me get hooked. And you are so right about character development. ** golden light descends around slayercat's head....choirs of angels sing in the distance...then all is strangly silent ** ...what was that?

lol...congrats Slayer...And yeah, it was one of the two shows that helped me convince my wife that you can have sci-fi and great plot-archs/character development...
As for Legend of the Rangers, frankly, I'm in the minority of B5 fanatics who actually liked the premise and wished they'd made the pilot into a full on series...I do agree that the virtual reality targeting gimic was a bit much, but beyond that I really liked the movie...

I was most fascinated by the technomages. They were something else but a bit self serving. I would have liked to know more about them.
I really felt sorry Lyta Alexander. She was one of the the most screwed over characters in the show and probably the most powerful by the end. I really hated the way she got treated. She was one of my favorites.

I completely agree about Lyta! Besides, she's a hot red-head...what's not to love!? ;D
And they go more into the tehcnomages in Crusade, but you're right, if it had continued we'd have found out even more...especially like the deal with the armageddon box!!!

some of Lyta's plight is dealt with in the Bestor Trilogy. Still she gets used by the Vorlons and discarded like so much trash.
Then Sherridan uses her to defeat the Shadows and then back to the trash can lady.
Then she's off to save Mars and back to the trash can
They should have given her an unlimitd credit card, the besrt room on the station and a closet full of medals.
Instead they treat her like crap and she ends up with the other TP's wanting a home planet of their own. I never understood why that got denied. I guess it was all about the illusion of control.
Face it, no mundane person will ever have control over a TP. The will only think they do.
