The creator of Cthulhu, namer of the Necronomicon and all around hero of horror...
I love that very few of his main characters survive the stories (at least not sane)...But even more, I love that he generally refused to fully describe the true horrors...let the reader's minds create the most greusom and terrifying aspects imaginable...

I love that he was such a great writer that people actually think the Necronomicon is a real book. It's often used in other horror stories.
One of my favorite RPGs was Call of Cthullu by Chaosium Games. One of the first things they say in the manual, "Do not get too attached to your characters."
Like his stories, the more the character learns about what's really going on around them, the more insane they become. If you push too far too fast, it's Arkham Asylum for you. (also used in other works, even the Batman franchise)
Lovecraft became one of my favorite authors back in my 'college' days. He's one of the few that I have read more than once.

He definitely created a whole world that has become 'bigger than the sum', so to speak. The Cthulhu Mythos can be found everywhere! Cases in point, I bought my BIL a stuffed plushie Cthulhu for Christmas, my daughter found a roleplay card game called "Munchkin Cthulhu" and you can even buy car emblem with the Cthulhu fish eating the Christian fish.

I have a friend who's such a big fan that she has a hand-knit cozy for her, er, personal massage toy...
