My pet peeve would be....when the story ends and I'm left wanting more! AHHH! But wait, that's probably a good thing, right? ;D
But seriously, I hate that authors have to throw in little "refresh" thoughts to bring the reader who maybe doesn't reread a book a dozen times up to speed. Some people are really good at doing it where you don't realize it's happening and then it's done but when it starts to take up a page, I get irritated. I'm such a brat.

Terry Goodkind does that way too much. I really found it annoying every time he described a group, or a person again and again and again. I believe half his books are refreshers for the previous books. If a reader is 5 books deep into a series and can't remember who the main players are or where the main locations are, then maybe they should find a new hobby.

Very good points! The idea is to allow a reader to pick up a book in the middle of the series and not be lost, but I hear ya.

I don't like starting a series in the middle. I want to be there from the beginning.
Just recently, i bought Brother Odd by Dean Koontz. I didn't realize it was the third book of a series. He doesn't write that many and i thought it was a stand alone.
I didn't read it until I bought the other two first.

Well, I understand how you feel Vamp, but a lot of people don't mind picking up a book on a whim...actually, although I prefer to read a series through, there's been times I haven't found out a book was part of one until after I read...at which point if the author hadn't done the descriptions I'd be completely lost and it would reflect badly on the author... Not to mention some of us have horrible memories that need refreshing...some things slip through, like, say, who's the agent of what sign?

^Exactly. I prefer to read from the beginning though, myself. I'm anal.

I'm pretty flexxible on starting on a third or fourth book, it's how I found Kim. XD

All authors and even writers for TV shows so it. It is needed to and I understand that. I don't have a problem when it's well done.
Some authors,(Terry Goodkind is my best example) does it way too much. As his series(Sword of Truth) progresses, it gets worse because he has so much information from the previous books to update readers on.
Back in the day, I remember books that had a huge 'cast' would have a table listing all of the characters, factions and key locations for the reader to look up if they got lost. I liked that better.

Pet peeve- unfinished business.
As much as I LOVE the books, it drove me crazy at the end of "Taste of Night" when Joanna saw Regan and Ben together and just sent Regan a note. And then Vicki left us hanging... Don't get me wrong- it's good to keep us hanging.
BUT IT DRIVES ME BONKERS!

I just discovered a new one. i was watching the last episode of season 4 of Alias on my portable DVD player. What happened in the last 10 seconds startled me so badly, I almost dropped it and it got slammed shut. Sydney and Vaughn are riding along in the car all happy. Syd's talking about eloping and Vaughn says he wants to be all honest, no secrets, "My name is not Michael Vaughn.."
BOOM!! Big car/truck T-bones them. The view is from the passenger side looking at him. It's like being in the car and happens so fast after the all warm fuzzy it's very shocking. {/spoiler]
I hate when that happens. They did a similar thing in Veronica Mars. It also scared the blood clots outta me.
