You may have noticed my "radio silence" the last couple of days. We just got back from freshman orientation at the university Ailish will be attending in the fall. Basically, it was an all day event meeting professors, advisors, asking tons of questions, running all over campus and listening to inspirational "you picked the best college because" speeches. I was really good! I almost cried three times, but managed to control myself and avoid embarrassing the kid. I think she's finally getting excited. They do have some pretty cool programs. She'll be part of the 'Living-Learning' dorm environment. This means everyone on her floor has the same major and includes not just freshmen, but upper class as well. So she'll be with students that have already had some of the classes she'll take. They also have special events where the faculty advisers actually come to the floor and they all cook dinner together and hang out. I have already set dates for our first visit and which weekend she'll come home, even though she doesn't leave until August. I'm pitiful.

That's sounds like a pretty awesome setup though. It's all right--you're not pitiful~thats your baby and she's leaving the nest.

Hey, I've been there. My son going off to college wasn't too bad because I still had my daughter at home. But when she left, it was a big adjustment. And for some reason, at least for me, the time leading up to shipping her off was much worse than after she had left. Afterwards, I was able to settle down into a new routine fairly quickly. I had friends that helped. I am sure you will get through it but hope it isn't too bad for you. And hopefully she isn't too far away?? Knowing she was only a 3 hour drive away helped me. (I won't talk about the 9 months she spent in Europe.....) And I really hope Ailish loves her university and has a blast at school. Oh, and learns something, too.

That's a really good set-up (for her). It makes sense to have all the kids with the same major together like that. College, logical, go figure.
Brace yourself, the worst is yet to come. We'll be here when you need to freak out.

She's majoring in graphic design and thinking of minoring in photography. And btw, classes have really changed since my day. They offer a "math" class called Gaming: Beating the Numbers and an American Civilizations class about the Salem witch trials that includes a trip to Salem.

Things sure have changed since I went to college. I have both my boys at home YET, they are both at local colleges. The oldest is finally moving into an apartment (it's three blocks from where I work) so I am sure I'll see him a LOT! The youngest will have to be pried out of this house with a crowbar or perhaps we can sell him with it in five years when we are moving to Florida?

Florida is so over rated. S.E. Ga is just like Fl but better. It's less cropwded, and things are a lot cheaper. We have the same crappy climate and the same flora and fauna found down there.
as an extra added bonus, we are less likely to get wiped off the face of the Earth by a hurricain.
I am not saying S.E. Ga is great, I am just saying it's better than Fl.

I want to stand at the door of the Haunted Mansion and scare the crap out of little kids with just a look. SE GA doesn't have WDW and hurricanes don't scare me, I've lived in tornado prone Wisconsin all my life.

Yes, but in Wisconsin, you can have a basement, not so in Fl.
Scaring lil kids is fun! once way back in the day, I used to have an Orange Winged Amazon parrot. I took her everywhere with me.
One day I was going to the mall with a friend of mine. On the way in, this little girl saw my bird and was telling her mom, "Oh, mommy! look at the pretty bird!" "Yes, sweaty is sure is pretty."
With out a beat I swung Alex(the bird) around and said, "KILL!" This made her wings flap and she squawked.
The little girl looked she was trying to go back to original home. mom was not amused and my friend was totally freaked. "I can't believe you just did that!"
me either
