The title of this post interested me, then I got to thinking, why cant you come out with the comics that Jo is reading to learn what she needs to learn in comic form? That would be awesome! If you actually published the manuals as comics! I already love the books, I think this would also make a good supergeek roleplaying game! Yes I am one of the supergeeks <laughs> but if you get a chance Vicki Look into it I think that would be so sweet!

As AWESOME as that would be for us fans, Vicki has no control over that stuff at this point. But what a great idea!

Ah, but bringing it to them and getting them interested are two different things. They, then, have to get their peeps interested. It's a process... and one I can't control. Alas. Again, though, I'm ready for the opportunity.

I think, as with any product, the powers that be have to determine whether or not the demand is worth the cost it takes to develop the product.
Look how long authors such as LKHamilton and Sherrilyn Kenyon were uber popular before they got comics. And that's an easier media to switch to than gaming.
You guys gotta consider what a big leap this would be. And a costly gamble it could be from the perspective of creators. We're just a few crazy fans. Ya know? Although the concept itself sounds great, IMO.

Wait, does HarperCollins make you sign away all other media rights when you enter into a contract with them or is there simply a moratorium on them until so much time has passed? Vicki's earlier response would seem to indicate the former but I am curious.
Personally, if I were going to speak to a publisher about a comics series that ties in with this type of work, I might try someone like IDW or Dark Horse. Both companies have an excellent track record with adapting works from franchise properties.

Nope, I didn't sign the rights away but Raven is right about risk vs. popularity. We're talking business here, and it's hard to get people to lay down cold cash on a newbie.
I agree with you about IDW, though. I _adore_ what they're doing with Joe Hill right now.
We'll just put it out there in the big U and keep our fingers crossed. {g}

Well, don't sell yourself short Vicki. You're not the daughter of Steven King, but you're an excellent writer who is currently three novels into a pretty bankable series. Not only that, but the Zodiac books are a natural tie-in to comics work. Geez your pitch just writes itself. Considering the comics publisher takes the bulk of the risk I don't think it would take much to get this off the ground. Will it make money? Harder to predict, but in times of bad economy, comics and movies historically experience an upsurge so it's a good time to try. ...and look what Joe Hill did with only one novel and a book of short stories under his belt. I wonder if McGrath could be conned into doing the graphic novel covers.

I've had loose conversations with about three companies, but it's all very, "Hi, my name is..." sort of stuff. I think Raven is right; they want someone established before they take a huge financial chance. So I don't worry myself over it. I just write. Oh, and McGrath did the cover for Butcher's new series (or they appropriated it from the books), though someone else acted as illustrator. And though Hill has "only" the one novel, it was outstanding. He's been scribbling for a long time, is an exceptional writer, and I admire him for doing the work and not relying on his father's name. I can't wait to see what he has coming up next. (Can you tell I'm a fangirl? )
