I sometimes get nervous about these...my wife entered Poetry.com's contest a few years back and was selected...in the end there's a few major catches involved...the first is that they choose a hundred or so winners who then will obviously want to buy a copy and then a couple for friends/family...at $80/book that's some profit there (even at $40 as a special author price)...then there's the contest...in order to win, or have your poem considered by the literary publishers, you have to attend their convention at $600/head ($1000 for friends/family)...
I'm not saying it's not worth it, both my and her parents have a copy of a poetry book that she's been officially published in, which is very cool, but the piles of mail we've gotten from them asking her to submit another is vaguely annoying..and her realization that we simply couldn't afford the convention, which automatically put her out of contention for any cool possibilities like having it read to an audience, was so depressing that it broke my heart...I was almost willing to figure out a way to skip rent for 3+ months so we could afford the convention (but even then we'd have had to figure out travel and lodgings)...
I'm just saying go in with a level head and know some of these aren't all they're cracked up to be...
And yes, I might very well enter this...just gotta check out the fine print and see if I have a story that fits...

deathlynx,
You know, I did the Poetry.com thing and yes it's cool to see your stuff in print, but it is kind of a racket. Save your money and pay your rent. As far as Writers Digest, I think they are on the up and up--I'm a book club member and I think they're legit. I wouldn't have a problem entering any of their contests. Just my two cents.

I agree. Anything that makes the author pay that much is definitely a racket. A serious offer should not involve any kind of major investment by the author other than a manuscript and postage.

That was my thought in general...which is why I tend to warn people off of Poetry.com...but it also means I think twice and read the fine print about other contests...

poetry.com is a crook. I've heard that from several people!
Writer's Digest is legit. I've known people who've won the smaller contests and there's nothing you need to buy.
