I got the impression throughout that it was just mother, but at one point in the swinger's ball scene it says stepmother... |

Nope, it's stepmother. Her marriage to Cher's father was a May-December thing. There's a bit in TASTE about how everyone thought she married for money, but she was truly in love, and that's why she and Cher are so close.
Ah, the swinger's ball...one of my faves to write.

Doesn't surprise me honestly...I'm on a forum attached to an erotica writing site and one of the people there did some research about common symbols used for earings/rings/miscelanious jewlery to denote what alternative sexuality a person is into...
