Even if the cover artist intended it to be Hunter, SO WHAT? It can't ruin the character for the reader! Everyone has different perceptions of what someone looks like as it is. I once read a book and HATED the cover model of the dude so much that I scribbled his face out with a pen because it haunted me every time I saw his ugly face when I read the book. And that's big, because I *never* deface books. But he was so 80's Headbangers Ball dorky that I just couldn't stomach the look of him! Did it ruin the character? Hell no. It just made me think the cover artist and publisher peeps were tards for letting that pic print. ^LMAO Totally agree it doesn't ruin the character, he is just not that pretty to look at (to me any way). I prefer the old covers with just Jolivia on them, but that is just my opinion

Covers are a collaboration between the cover artist and the marketing dept. of the publisher. They are designed to catch the eye and sell the product. If the author had input, they might be different and actually have something to do with what is inside the cover. Alas...that is not the case. Sigh....

I won't say anything other than ... what Deb said. Oh, but for one thing that will be glaringly obvious to anyone who actually (ahem) reads the book:
There's no goddamn sword. Of any length.
Now. Pleading fifth.

orgy? where? Vicki - I imagine it has to be frustrating as hell to have no input on a cover. Do the artists typically read the books first or just go on a description? Just curious

No, artists are commissioned by the publisher. It's a collaboration between sales, the art director, and the artist. Really, the artist is just given marching orders.

Sometimes the artists read the book. Lisa Desimini, who does Charlaine Harris' covers, reads the entire book before she starts the cover art. It helps her with the impression of either a scene or general feel of the book. The art director does have a lot of input, sometimes telling the artist exactly what they want on the cover. A lot of times that direction comes directly down from marketing. Lisa said that they always request that Sookie is floating on the covers...why? Nobody knows. She is a telepath for chrissake, she doesn't levitate...that's Bill's talent. And Eric is the one who can fly.
It always comes down to the bottom line....catch the eye and sell the product. $$$$$$$$

It is pretty cool for those of us who judge books by their covers!

I gotta admit the cover raised some questions for me... but I haven't read COS yet so I don't have any ideas other than that's Hunter or Ben... or very possibly another male member of the troop
