 Vicki's Panel at the Con
« Thread Started on Jul 26, 2008, 4:54pm »

Continuing with the Con report, we were off to Vicki's Panel entitled "Super Heroes, Super Fiction". The emphasis was writing super hero stories in prose versus comics. Here are some pix and a couple of questions that were asked by the moderator, owner of Mysterious Galaxy books.

And ever the professional...

So here are the paraphrased questions Vicki had to answer. ( I am not a professional report, this will be clear. :) )

Q. What heroes drew you to write your stories?
VP. None specifically, just the whole genre and the desire to write the stories from a more personal point of view.

Q. How do you write action versus draw it?
VP Focus on the emotion of your characters, good or bad, because their intent will guide you and it will write itself.

There were, of course, other questions but with such a big panel, and most of them coming from comic books first, the questions seemed more aimed at them.

So then it was off to the autograph area. Below are pix of the upper level of the convention center and the autograph area etc.

This is where I left V to herself and headed out to find gifts for my kids etc.. I was very successful. I returned at 6pm to Vicki wrapping up and Eldon, his friend Sean and SciFiChic, Angela. The plan was to head off for ice cream. That quickly turned into dinner, because, well, we should probably eat real food before ice cream.....right? Vicki didn't see that as a prerequisite for ice cream but went along just the same. Vicki, Eldon, Angela, Eldon's friend Kevin and myself all headed out into the Gas Lamp area of downtown. It's all very quaint and cool and bustling with activity. This is where my camera gave up on me and all visual records of the evening reside with Ms. Pettersson. She told me she attempted to post them on Friday but her hotel's network was down, so I'm sure she'll be on that real soon. ;)

We ate at a nice little Mexican seafood place which just happened to be across from Gheridells ice cream shop. We enjoyed a couple of pitchers of margaritas, some great food, teased Eldon about his fine physique and general had a great time yammering on and on about a million things and the publishing game.

Angela won for most books read in a year which was 152. At the con she was toting two large canvas bags filled with free books from publishers all wanting her review. Paid to read, pretty nice. Wish I could read that fast.

This is where Eldon's extreme niceness kicks in. To our surprise he picked up dinner for all! a very generous person!

After dinner we were straight across the street heading for ice cream. However we got diverted by the boutique next door, selling purses that looked like tea cup dogs and Vicki bought a hat. I bought a t-shirt and we were off for ice cream.

Angela and I are not big ice cream people, as it turns out, but Vic, Eldon and Kevin sure are. They ordered the 'Earthquake'. It is a large plate filled with maybe 10 or 12 scoops of ice cream, bananas, whip cream and loads of sprinkles. Don't worry, there are pictures! :o

Between the three of them it was gone in about 7 minutes. There are pictures of that too.

Well, being completely stuffed, we headed on back to the convention center to catch our various rides to various hotels. I was not going to stay more than the one day. However, after losing more than half the day to traffic my husband suggested I try to stay over if I can and make up for it on Friday. Angela was generous enough to allow me to share her room with her as she had 2 beds. She is a heck of a nice girl and if you haven't checked her site already, please do.

The next day we headed back to the con and I did my stint volunteering. I was sent to the 'portfolio review' area to be 'gatekeeper' for one of the review booths. It was my job to call out the names of the artists who COULD be reviewed by Hasbro and ask the others to 'back off', with great politeness, of course.

May I suggest that any of you considering going to a con, of any size, please think about volunteering for it. You get in for free and the commitment is usually quite small. I enjoyed being on the 'working side' very much and I got to see loads of people. While this convention is not particularly expensive, ($35 for all 3 days I think) others can be and volunteering can be a good way to cut the costs.

After my volunteer time I headed to the floor again to see things more slowly and carefully. About 3pm I met up with Vicki again after she had been at another panel. She was all excited about meeting someone and was all 'fan girl'. It was very fun, but I'll leave that for her report. We did a bit of shopping and went passed the Mysterious Galaxy booth again. Sitting there, signing, were Jim Butcher and Charlaine Harris! Now I was the fan girl. I said nothing to either authors.

Then it was time to make my way to my car and head home. Goodbyes to Vicki, and off I went.

Now, the night before we had all debated whether I needed to move my car or not.
We all decided that surely it would be fine. Well, that being said, I'm sure you can guess where this is going.

My car had been towed.

$269 and an hour later, I was on the road heading north.

Now while I am still stinging from the cash and my own stupidity. I had a great time at my first big convention. When I finally got home, my husband started looking through the weighty convention guide and declared, "This looks cool! We're BOTH going next year." Well, we do have family costumes of The Incredibles. So look for us if you go. :)

cheers

Stacey

I got all excited when I saw the HBO True Blood booth in the pics. Awesome pics, but I am shocked you didn't say hi to Charlaine and Jim B. Charlaine is the friendliest woman on earth and Jim is a sweetie. We had dinner with him and Shannon last year while at RT-Houston. Lovely people!

That look like it was a lot of fun. I sure miss California sometimes. I would have loved to meet Charlain and Jim. I don't suppose you saw anything about NBC's Heroes there? They were talking about show episode one of season 3 there. I'd love to see that. I am a big time Heroes fan.

I'll have to give it a shot when I get home. the work 'puter doesn't like that link. It blocks things like games, entertainment and porn. After all that, there's very little I can actually access from here.

^LOL! too funny vampy.

Thanks for all the pics and reporting Stacey; looks like you had a great time! (well, except the traffic jam to begin with and the impounded car to end--the middle was great!) =)

Well for the good to feel really really good, you must have it surrounded by bad. No reward is wortyhwhile if there is no struggle to get it.

Wise words all. Glad you all are enjoying the pix. I expect Vicki will get her's up as well once her story is done. they should be fun.

I did see an NBC booth but not one specific to Heroes. The show is back in production though and the first 3 are finished, I think, don't quote me. I'm counting the days as well. Looks like September like the others.
