 Comic Con Report & PIx
« Thread Started on Jul 26, 2008, 4:00pm »

As promised, I am posting a brief report of my first trip to Comic Con in San Diego and the fun time had by me and our intrepid V.

Well, I began my adventure on Thursday at a little before 6am only to discover that I had left my ATM card at home. Luckily, I found that out in less than a mile. I was back on the road with an iced mocha about 6:15am heading south for San Diego, dreaming of the geeks Mecca.

The traffic report announced there was a big rig that had caught fire around 5am. it had flipped 3 times and caught fire. It was, of course, on my route. however, they continued with the information that the driver was being air lifted out at 6:30 and that the left lane was open and they were working to clear the freeway. they did not sound alarmed, not did they warn people to STAY AWAY, which they are known to do. Sooooo, since I would not be near the crash for another hour and a half, I figured the problem would be clear enough and I was already pretty committed to my route. I would add an hour if I switched routes at THAT point, so on I sped.

THEN...the obvious happened. About 8 miles or so from the crash I ground to a halt. This is what it looked like.

But I thought, "This wont last long. They have at least two lanes open by now."
No such luck. It took me 4 hours to go 8 miles. YES!!! 8 MILES!!!! My own fault, I guess. I read, I played games on my ipod. I listened to lectured on CD. I was supposed to arrive at 8:30 am for volunteer check in and meet up with Vicki in the afternoon. At this rate, I was going to be lucky to get there at all.

At last my time in the twilight zone was over.

I was on my way. I arrived in the teeth of activity and after some circling 'round I found parking and just as I did, it was 1:30 and I heard from Vicki. She had arrived as well. Off to the convention center I went. Here are some shots of Downtown SD and the HUGE convention center, ALL filled with the con.

I checked in and Vicki and yammered on the phone as we found each other at the Mysterious Galaxy book store booth.

"Where are you?"
"In the 1400 aisle."
"So am I!"
"I see a woman in a pointy yellow witches hat."
"I see her too. She's right next to me. head for the hat!"

And so we found each other and the fun began. Vicki introduced me to one of her author friends, Eldon Thompson, whom I'm sure many of you have read, thuogh I have not. He was very nice. How nice, I was to find out later.

I have only 3 words to say about the massive overwhelm of the Comic Con.

OMG

Here some pix of Vicki and I tooling around just taking it in.

How did I get stuck with Jaba...

and Vicki end up with Boba and pals?

But we both got close to Elvis.

Then it was up to the second floor for some lunch and Vicki's panel. I'll continue that on the next thread. I suspect this is too large already.

TBC :)

yes it was a total jam. I cannot describe the weirdness. I cannot, as yet, grock it in its fullness. ;)

.
That was Bubba from The Southern Vampire Mysteries dressed as a storm trooper! Look on the bright side, standing next to jabba makes you look even thinner. If it hadn't been for all the people stoping to take pictures of the semi truck and news van, triaffic would have never slopwed down.

That's one of my pet peeves;people gawking at accidents, hoping for a glimpse of blood! :o You would think they were vampires (no offense Vampy).

One morning on my way into work there was a 4 mile long backup on the freeway... 5 MPH, bumper to bumper, for what? A cop was giving a guy a ticket on the left side of the freeway. A TICKET FOR CRIPE'S SAKE!!!!!! I was late for work because an idiot was speeding. Sheesh! <ok, rant over> >:(

Now back to ComicCom....

There seemed to be so much going on there, I'm sure first-timers would miss a lot simply because it would be overwhelming. The price seems very inexpensive for the amount of stuff going on. Were there a lot of freebies, or was most of the stuff there for sale?

Debim,

Many freebies if you were a hustler and stood in line. Saw loads of folks with loads of stuff. Vicki and I tried to get a free t-shirt but there was at least an hour line to get a voucher to get in the line to pick it up. So if you had the time you had the stuff. :)

And look! Vicki's book up on display! Weee!
How exciting!
Holy crap- somebody made a life-sized Batman out of Legos. (Did Vicki grab his butt? She likes to molest superheroes, ya know.)

Thank you SOOOO much for sharing this with us. Too cool.
